You might be laughing. Do I really think that a week of SQLskills Performance Tuning training is a vacation? I do.

Merriam-Webster defines vacation as: a respite or a time of respite from something. From what I am seeking a respite? Work.
But…most of my work is SQL Server, right?
Kind of. Since taking a team lead position, I don’t get to do quite as much technical work every day as I would like. I am happy with an 80% technical, 20% non-technical work day (even higher on the technical percent). I am at maybe 50/50 right now. I’m working on changing that balance, but it’s not as easy to shift as I thought (sadly, it was easy to do less technical work each day).
Therefore, a week of just SQL Server stuff is a respite from everything that’s not SQL Server. It’s just the vacation I need. Of course, I am not taking a vacation from all work responsibilities, so I will still check emails and answer what’s urgent. But my plan is to only answer the important stuff. Everything else can wait.
Even if I were in my old position, next week would still be a vacation, because I get to focus on learning and improving my skills.
I will miss my family. I admit that I look forward to time alone, but I will miss them the moment they drop me off at the airport on Sunday. Today I can say that I look forward to time by myself, to the training, to seeing all my peeps. Next week is all about learning and getting to know people in the Community better, and even though there are moments where I feel very selfish, I think I’ve earned this vacation.
Great vacation plan, you’ll have a blast with the intense learning. However, you might need a “real” vacation afterward to recover 🙂
